Avant Green Our family was a second-hand kind of poor. Which growing up in the eighties meant most of your possessions dated back an extra decade or so. The decor in our house was jokingly referred to as “Garage Sale Modern” and predominately used the theme colors Avocado and Brown. I was always slightly embarrassed by our tweed two-foot tall barrel lampshade lamps with the avocado orb lamp bases and the brown floral velour couch. Oh, and no 60's flashback living room would be complete without the press-board octagon end tables. Without a doubt the most glaringly outdated furniture in the house was our avocado-wash dining room set complete with a hutch who’s interior was painted bright cherry red. Were all of these things functional? Of course. Were they ugly? HECK YEAH! So I’ve been living on my own for quite some time now, picking up pieces of furniture and decor which appeal to me. When all of the sudden I realized... I have my mother’s house. Oh sure we may not call it “Avocado” anymore - that would be completely uncouth, it’s “Jade” or “Olive” now. My decorating colors of choice are Green (ranging in shades of avocado to lime), Black, and Accents of Silver, Bright Orange, and Fire Engine Red. It’s not a decorating style that’s going to age well. But I whether through exposure or otherwise, really like my house. It’s bright and bold and cheerful. I suppose I am resigned to the retro-factor. Afterall what color am I going to paint my bedroom? .... I’ll just let you guess 7:41 p.m., 2006-11-04
